The following steps give you an idea of what process a typical digital storytelling goes through ....
1. Decide on a Subject Area
Digital Storytelling can be used in a broad variety of ways. If you are working in the public or private sectors, digital storytelling can help. Do you want to encourage environmental good practice in your community? Do you have a health programme you are trying to get people to engage in? Do you want to record stories to promote your local area to tourists? Do you need people to change their behaviours for health and safety? And many more..
2. Select Participants
What kind of stories are you trying to capture and who is going to tell them? Having a criteria for selecting participants is important to the output of the digital stories and Macroom E can assist with this.
3. Hold Workshops
Workshops are frequently needed for digital storytelling projects. We would recommend having two half days depending on the project, one to bring people together to encourage and motivate them. This is a creative workshop to get the storytelling juices going! The second workshop is some training on using a video-making package. These come free with iMovie or Windows Movie Maker.
4. Provide Follow-On Support
Some people will need some follow on assistance, whether that be technical support in terms of using the software package or some support in the development and scripting of their story.
5. Story Production
In digital storytelling projects, participants make the stories themselves, they decide on the story and what images or video will support the delivery of the story. People often need a little bit of help with this.
6. Final Editing of Stories
The project participants aren't media professionals so some final editing of the stories will be needed to finalise the videos.
7. Promotion
What behaviour are you trying to promote and who is your target audience? Marketing support is available to help you with this. Digital stories tend to affect the people who make them and the people who are shown the stories. Essentially, the outcome of a digital storytelling project is to influence the attitudes, motivation, engagement and ultimately the behaviour of your target audience.
8. Research & Evaluation
Has your project worked? We can help you to monitor and evaluate your project in terms of changing perceptions, attitudes, engagement and behaviour of your target group.
